Restoration: The action or process of accurately revealing, recovering, or representing the state of a historic place or of an individual component, as it appeared at a particular period in its history, while protecting its heritage value.

Two terms commonly used in historic preservation are important to keep in mind: the “historic character” and the “integrity” of a property. “Historic character” is, in essence, the things that make a building special—its “visually distinctive features, materials, and spaces,” for example, or the architectural styling of a structure or its unique methods of construction or craftsmanship. “Integrity” refers to whether or not a building retains these important character-defining features and has not been inappropriately changed over time.
